Weglot alternative
A Weglot alternative that lives inside Shopify
Weglot serves your translated pages through a layer of its own and separate subdomains. Lingomatic writes into Shopify’s translation layer instead — no DNS record to change, no script on your storefront, and nothing left to unpick if you ever leave.

In their words
What merchants say when they go looking
Weglot holds 4.5 stars across 827 reviews, and its five-star page is full of people praising the support and how much of their store it reaches. The low-star pages are where the pattern sits — and the same three subjects come back.
“My website is down already for 7 days!! I am receiving an error because they messed up my DNS completely and now globally my website is down.”
“Our small business (200 products), with only two translated languages, somehow exceeds 200,000 words, putting us in the $299/month pricing tier.”
“I’ve uninstalled weglot app but still be charged in the next month.”

The structural difference
Proxy or native — the choice that shows up later
Almost everything merchants argue about later is decided by this one thing: whether the translated page is assembled by the app or by Shopify. Weglot’s architecture is a translation layer in front of your store, reached through subdomains you point at it. Lingomatic writes translations into Shopify and then gets out of the way.
| Proxy or JS layer | Native (Lingomatic) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where translations are stored | On the app’s own servers, served through its layer | In Shopify’s translation layer, on your store |
| Setup | DNS records for translated subdomains | Pick your languages. Your domain is untouched. |
| hreflang and canonicals | Generated by the app | Generated by Shopify Markets |
| Storefront rendering | Text is swapped as the page loads | Shopify serves the translated text — nothing to flicker |
| URL handles | Translated, with the app’s URL scheme | Untouched unless you turn it on |
| After uninstall | Switcher, tags and redirects can linger; DNS has to be rolled back | Published translations stay; our copy is deleted after 48 hours |
| Billing | Direct card payment, outside Shopify | Shopify subscription — ends with the app |
Native means Shopify Markets does the multilingual SEO for you — Shopify’s own documentation on international selling describes how subfolders and hreflang are handled.
Pricing
What the meter is actually counting
Weglot bills per word across the store: 10,000 words on Starter at $17/month for one language, 50,000 on Business at $32 for three, 200,000 on Pro at $87 for five, and higher tiers above that. The complaint is rarely about the rate. It is that the number climbs while nobody adds any content.
Lingomatic meters credits, and one credit is one word of Standard translation — the same unit, and the same thing to resent. So the answer has to be in the rules around it: you see the estimate before a job runs, imported and duplicated translations cost nothing, draft and archived products cost nothing, unchanged content costs nothing, there is no overage and no automatic upgrade, and credit packs do not expire.

When Weglot is the right call
If you need text translated that never passes through Shopify’s Translations API — an embedded third-party widget, a headless front end, content Shopify simply does not expose — a proxy can reach it and a native app cannot. That is a real capability, and it is why some merchants who tried cheaper apps report that only part of their text came across.
If your team already works in Weglot’s dashboard and your word count sits comfortably inside a tier, switching costs more than it saves. And if two languages is all you will ever need, Shopify’s own Translate & Adapt is free and enough.
Lingomatic is bounded by what Shopify exposes, and we would rather you knew that before installing than after. We are also new: the app launched in March 2026, so there is no long review history to weigh against Weglot’s ten years.
FAQ
Switching from Weglot: the questions merchants ask
Can I import my Weglot translations into Lingomatic?
Usually not, and it is fairer to say so up front. Weglot serves translated pages through its own layer rather than writing into Shopify’s Translations API, so in most stores there is nothing sitting in Shopify for us to import. Export whatever Weglot lets you export, then expect to re-translate. Apps that publish natively — Shopify Translate & Adapt, T Lab, LangShop — import at zero credits instead.
Do I have to change my DNS to use Lingomatic?
No. Lingomatic publishes into Shopify’s translation layer and your translated storefronts are Shopify Markets subfolders on your own domain. There is no record to add, and none to roll back if you leave.
Will switching hurt my search rankings?
Your URLs do not change. Lingomatic leaves product, collection, page and article handles untouched unless you switch handle translation on yourself, and hreflang and canonical tags are generated by Shopify Markets rather than by the app. What does need care is the gap between uninstalling one app and publishing with the next — publish first, uninstall second.
What happens to my translations if I uninstall Lingomatic?
They stay published on your store, because they live in Shopify’s own translation layer rather than on our servers. We delete our copy 48 hours later, as Shopify requires. Publish before you leave any translation app, ours included.
Is Lingomatic billed through Shopify?
Yes. It is a Shopify app subscription, so it appears on your Shopify invoice and ends when you uninstall the app. There is no separate card on file, no overage charge, and no automatic upgrade to a higher tier.
How much does Lingomatic cost next to Weglot?
Basic is free: 10,000 credits a month, 2 languages, 100 products. Growth is $19/month for 5 languages, 50,000 credits and 500 products. Pro is $49/month for 200,000 credits with unlimited languages and products. One credit is one word of Standard translation.
